WHAT ARE PHOTOPOLYMERS?

Photopolymers are material formulations based on polymers/oligomers/monomers which can be selectively polymerized and/or crosslinked upon image-wise exposure by light radiation such as ultra-violet light. For final use, they are made into different forms like, for instance, Evonik's liquids or resins in other words.

INFINAM® TI 3100 L photopolymer resin for 3D printing applications

The combination of properties makes INFINAM® TI 3100 L the new standard for additive manufacturing of industrial components using vat polymerization technologies such as SLA and DLP. The toughness of the printed components is 30 J/m3 with a high elongation at break of well over 100%. The new material can therefore withstand strong impact or permanent mechanical effects such as pressing or impact.

The range of possible applications extends from industrial components to automotive parts and individual applications in the consumer goods sector, which, in addition to design-free forms, require strong mechanical loads in object use.

With this formulation, Evonik is responding to customers requesting a white-colored PVC-like resin for the rapidly growing market of limited edition designer toys. The white colored material is ideal for objects with a high level of detail and excellent surface quality that are virtually indistinguishable from comparable injection-molded parts. The fully cured material combines excellent impact strength with high elongation at break and exhibits long-lasting thermomechanical performance.

DEVELOPMENT OF PHOTOPOLYMER 3D PRINTING MATERIALS

Evonik’s INFINAM® TI photopolymer 3D printing materials for vat polymerization technologies such as SLA or DLP have been designed at the group’s Asia Research Hub in Singapore. With the research hub, Evonik is expanding its collaboration with public and private research institutions and organizations. For instance, Evonik has formed a partnership with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore to develop novel technologies in 3D printing for industrial application. Therefore, Singapore is Evonik’s Research & Development Center for application driven development of new ready-to-use photopolymer 3D printing materials that can be processed on a wide range of common SLA and DLP machines commercially available on the market.

Evonik introduced INFINAM® TI 3100 L to fill this gap in the material landscape. This fast curing and easy to process photopolymer 3D printing material convinces due to the fact that printed parts can be machined easily after post processing. INFINAM® TI 5400 L is another example of application-focussed product development for use in the rapidly growing Asia market of limited edition designer toys.
